Dogs have always been my “thing.” But for the entirety of my seven-year marriage, I haven’t been able to have one because of our rental house agreement.
However, this year my marriage ended rather unexpectedly. Let’s just say I wasn’t dealing with the divorce very well when my older brother, Bo, pulled one of his typical innovative moves. He’d never admit this, but I’m convinced it was his grand attempt to save me from a lonely life of total boredom.
He moved across the country to start up a cafe in our great aunt Athaleen’s house—it had been sitting empty in the small West Virginia town where we’d grown up. This unique cafe would be set up so customers could pet shelter dogs while enjoying their favorite hot drinks. He was calling it the Barks & Beans Cafe, and I’d own—and run—the Barks half of it.
In other words, my business would be to hang out with dogs every day.
Of course, I jumped at the opportunity.
Once I got back home, I couldn’t have guessed I was going to meet my own new dog through the nearby shelter—a Great Dane named Coal. I also couldn’t have guessed that Coal was going to inadvertently pull me into a web of crime that seemed to be centered in the nearby spiritual healing center, Ivy Hill…the very place Coal’s owner had been murdered.
Now I’m scrambling to find out what’s going on at Ivy Hill before a cool and confident killer strikes again.
