Served Him Right, the latest thriller from best-selling author Lisa Unger, merges modern romantic entanglements with gothic elements to create a unique tale of two sisters with an intriguing past.
The sisters and their friends are celebrating an EX-orcism together. The party is at the elegant house of the older and protective sister, Vera. Amy, the younger sister, is deleting her recent ex boyfriend from her social media and asking the other attendees to do so too. Soon, the police intrude and ask Amy to come down to the station for questioning about Paul’s murder. Could Amy have done it? Or did Paul’s past come back to haunt him? Vera needs to figure it out ASAP.
While I love a genre mashup, this plot seems more like an arranged marriage than a true romantic attraction. I had an issue with the gothic elements seemingly coming out of nowhere during the story. Plus, the middle of the plot seemed to drag at least compared to the fast-paced beginning and conclusion.
Though Served Him Right is one of my least favorite of this author’s books, it is still worth a solid 3 stars. It is an enjoyable, if not spectacular, way to spend a few hours.
Thanks to NetGalley and Park Row for providing me with an advanced review copy.
