I just finished reading The Felicity Complex and I have to say, “wow!”. There is a lot going on in there.
Realistic female bots are created to serve those humans rich enough to afford a 1960s luxury underground bunker. Each bot grows increasingly human with all the complexities that entails. After years and years of waiting alone in the bunker, finally the Complex’s first guests arrive. The guests are hiding from the communists newly risen decades after the Complex was built. Will the bots and humans live happily ever after? Or will everything go horrifyingly wrong? What do you think?
The Felicity Complex made me think of how our current society is split between the haves and the have nots. Several of the world’s richest people are building bunkers and even spaceships to avoid the (inevitable?) retaliation of the poors. Recently, even communists have once again become the faceless enemy. Is our next step scaring people with threats of nuclear Armageddon? Whoops, that is also already happening. It is hard to believe that a satirical science fiction novel can have such ripped-from-the-headlines realness but that is the sad state of the world right now.
Read The Felicity Complex for its ingenious plot but love it for how it continues to lurk in your mind long after reading. 5 stars!
