Other Duties As Assigned

By Maggie Toussaint

Other duties as assigned is a phrase that most of us near the bottom of the employment ladder know very well. It means that your job involves more than what’s listed in the job description. This often translates into personal errands for your boss. Common tasks in this category are fetching coffee, picking up his/her dry cleaning, and covering for the boss.

In Spawning Suspicion, book 2 in my Seafood Caper Mystery series, amateur sleuth River Holloway Merrick faces a tough decision. The wedding she’s catering is suddenly at risk of not happening. It’s the 11th hour. River has food for 120 people on site, her staff is setting up for the reception dinner, when lo and behold, the mother of the bride, Geneva Walker, hurries across the lawn to the pool house where they are working with terrible news.

The groom is missing, he isn’t answering his phone, and the wedding’s off unless he arrives soon. River’s client tells her to find him.

Several things occur to River right away, chiefly, finding the groom is not in her catering contract. Geneva has no right to ask her to do it. River could confidently say no and continue setting up for the reception. After all, she didn’t budget much extra time for setup, and she needs every minute left to get everything staged properly.

Plus, River has high hopes for this event. She’s been planning for weeks and cooking for days for this shindig. All of the island’s movers and shakers will be here, and she expects the success of this event to win her new clients. Diluting her effort would be counterproductive.

But, without the groom there won’t be a wedding. The dinner will be cancelled. The guests will not taste her food. River doesn’t want that outcome.

The only way she comes out of this a winner is if the wedding goes off as planned, and the guests linger over the excellent meal she’s prepared. River is just as much impacted by the missing groom as the wedding party. For better or worse, their fates are temporarily aligned.

River gathers information about his last whereabouts and agrees to help. Her staff thinks she’s nuts. Once Geneva leaves, River explains her rationale. This falls under the unlisted other duties as assigned part of the catering contract.

Does River save the day? The answer is in Spawning Suspicion!

The death of island playboy Curtis Marlin doesn’t register on busy caterer River Holloway’s radar…that is, until her brother and his girlfriend are arrested for the former athlete’s murder. Certain of the pair’s innocence, the amateur sleuth sets out to investigate. Suspicion on the island spreads like chocolate sauce when River questions the victim’s teammates. The suspects don’t appreciate her stirring up trouble, but she won’t let an election-hungry sheriff make her brother a sacrificial lamb.

But there’s more than murder on River’s to-do list. A missing groom, catered banquets, and River’s own wedding plans keep her hopping like a short order cook. And as the cherry on the sundae, she has a wild kitty to tame. Under mossy oaks and rustling palmettoes, fact and fiction blend in a mouthwatering romp of good eatin’ and yummy recipes. Spawning Suspicion is the second in Toussaint’s Seafood Capers Mystery Series.
