A Deadly Inside Scoop Review, Interview and Giveaway

My Review

Win is finally re-opening her family’s ice cream shop in small town Ohio in A Deadly Inside Scoop. Construction delays have forced her to open Crewse Creamery on the first snow day of the year. In Ohio. Not exactly ice cream weather.

Even Win knows what to do on the first snow day. Scoop up some snow and make snow ice cream—no ice cream maker required. Unfortunately, while scooping she finds the dead body of her family’s arch enemy. The number one suspect? Her father! Win feels obligated to clear her father’s name by finding the real killer.

It is so nice to find such an engaging, loving, and ethnically diverse cast of characters in a cozy mystery. Win’s family are clearly devoted to one another. I’m envious of her relationship with her two best friends (since kindergarten!).

While the characters were my favorite part of A Deadly Inside Scoop, the mystery was challenging too. Plus it has four recipes for ice cream: snow, cherry chocolate chunk amaretto, pumpkin spice roll, and carmel corn.

With cold ice cream, warm family relationships, and a hot mystery to solve, this is a cozy mystery you will love! 4.5 stars!

Thanks to Berkley, NetGalley, Great Escape Virtual Book Tours and Edelweiss+ for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

Author Interview

  1. You have several cozy mystery series writing as Abby Vandiver. But none feature an attorney. As a former attorney, is there any reason why you haven’t written one into your books?
No one likes lawyers! I write cozy mysteries and in them amateurs solve the mysteries. I’ve just haven’t ever been able to fit an attorney into my stories. But, in my new book, A Deadly Inside Scoop, there is a law professor. That’s the closest I’ve gotten to writing one, although I have been thinking of a book or two with one.
  2. What does your writing area look like? Inside or outside? Formal or informal?
Inside, although I try to write outside if I can, it’s just that I live in Cleveland and we don’t have much warm weather. I try to keep my writing area clutter free that rarely happens. I have lots of papers, notebooks and pens around.
  3. Do you outline your books before writing them or let the characters go where they will?
I let my characters lead the way. I don’t outline and I start out with the names of the victim and all the suspects including the killer and the reason for the deed and then I just start to write.
  4. Is the setting for your new series, Chagrin Falls, Ohio based on a real town?
Yes! Chagrin Falls, Ohio is a real place. There is a waterfall there and a store that sits atop of it. It is a beautiful little community and people come from all over to visit. I hope my book does it justice. You should definitely come and visit sometime.
  5. Has the Stay Safe Ohio order impacted your writing?
It definitely has. I have had no motivation to write. Usually, I can write a book in three weeks, but in the last two months I have only been able to get out a few blog posts. Someone told me we’re all grieving and I think that may be true. One way I motivate myself is to read, but I’ve found that to be difficult to do as well. Hopefully all of this will be over soon. I just wonder how long it’ll take to get back to normal.
  6. After reading the delicious A Deadly Inside Scoop, I’m hungry for more. When is the next book in the series coming out?
The next book, A Game of Cones will be out in March 2021. Hopefully, my publisher will have it up for pre-order soon.

This book kicks off a charming cozy mystery series set in an ice cream shop—with a fabulous cast of quirky characters.

Recent MBA grad Bronwyn Crewse has just taken over her family’s ice cream shop in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and she’s going back to basics. Win is renovating Crewse Creamery to restore its former glory, and filling the menu with delicious, homemade ice cream flavors—many from her grandmother’s original recipes. But unexpected construction delays mean she misses the summer season, and the shop has a literal cold opening: the day she opens her doors an early first snow descends on the village and keeps the customers away.

To make matters worse, that evening, Win finds a body in the snow, and it turns out the dead man was a grifter with an old feud with the Crewse family. Soon, Win’s father is implicated in his death. It’s not easy to juggle a new-to-her business while solving a crime, but Win is determined to do it. With the help of her quirky best friends and her tight-knit family, she’ll catch the ice cold killer before she has a meltdown…

About Abby Collette

Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Abby Collette loves a good mystery. Born and raised in Cleveland, it’s even a mystery to her why she has yet to move to a warmer place. Author of the two Southern cozy mystery series Logan Dickerson Mysteries featuring a second-generation archaeologist and a nonagenarian who is always digging up trouble, and the Romaine Wilder Mysteries, set in East Texas, it pairs a medical examiner and her feisty auntie who owns a funeral home and is always ready to solve a whodunnit. Abby spends her time writing, facilitating writing workshops at local libraries and spending time with her grandchildren, each of which are her favorite.

  1. Cherry chocolate chunk amaretto sounds divine! What flavour does Abby like the best?
